Blog Reflection #6

Problem solving is a very important skill that is needed in any process to make it successful. No matter what we do, there will always be problems that are faced when creating new things or doing projects. The most important part is how we solve the problems that may occur. First we are presented with a place where students are graduating from high school and fail to read at a fifth grade level. First we start off with identifying the root of the problem. The main problem would be that the teachers aren’t developing ways for the students to be encouraged to read. They also probably don’t receive many assignments requiring them to read a chapter or two and then take a quiz on that chapter. Therefore, the best way to solve this problem would be to integrate a program that requires them to read so much a week and then take an in-class test on what they learned. The point behind this is that over time one’s reading level will improve the more they read. The mission would be to do everything possible to ensure that when students are entering their senior year of high school, they will be able to graduate with at least a fifth grade reading level.

The next school problem that we are presented with is that too many teachers abandon their jobs near the 5 year mark. As we already know, being a teacher is a lot of work. You must have patience and be able to get through rough days with a smile on your face and be able to treat everyone the same. The number one problem with teachers and keeping their jobs is the pay. Teachers always say “I don’t get paid enough to do this” when they may experience a problem that is more than teaching. Some teachers even have to work a second job to afford bills if they don’t have a spouse with a good job. The best way to resolve this problem of teachers quitting is to provide them with better pay that doesn’t make them second guess taking on a job they have a passion for.

The last problem has to do with the IT department. A company had an older operating system where their users knew how to update their own systems, but now that a new system is in place they have to call on our very limited technical personnel to perform frequent and routine system updates. The problem identified here is that the users don’t know how to update their own systems anymore due to the new system. This could be easily fixed by taking the process of releasing the new system. They should have scheduled training for each department so they could understand how to use the new system and be able to ask any questions needed. It seems to be that the employees/users had this new system thrown at their face without any training which of course would have them lost on how to use it and updated the system.
